Most, if not all, of our clients have regular maintenance on their computers. Part of what we do during maintenance, is eliminate the things that are most likely going to cause problems. One of these tasks is to eliminate Microsoft’s default search engine, Bing. We remove this as a search engine because it is paid search and all results are slanted in Microsoft’s favor, not the user. What does that mean? It means that paid search engines are more about profit and less likely to serve the user’s needs. They are less likely to properly vet their advertisers; and that can allow malware and other “bad actors” onto your screen and into your computer.
Sadly, even if Bing is removed, it can sneak back in resulting in continued use unbeknownst to the user. Others, familiar with the potential dangers of using Bing, continue to use it for various reasons. Due to the unsavory nature of Bing and the risks continued use pose to your computer, we urge you to read Forbes’ latest article on Bing malware infected ads and sites.
We urge you to be cautious. Regardless of what sort of system (PC or Mac) or protection you are or are not running, this does not make your system impervious to malware and/or viruses. As always, if you have questions or need help with any of this, just let us know.
